Breech Babes

Pulsatilla is a remedy that makes a suggestion to a baby to turn head down.   That is actually how the remedy works.  It gently suggests that anatomically it is easier to make an entrance in a head down, anterior position, this is just how most babies fit best through the pelvis.  Variations of this position usually create a period of waiting in labour as the baby makes its way to an optimal fit.

The reason homeopathy is so incredibly safe to take in pregnancy and labour , is that the only way it works is WITH the body. Working with the knowledge each person possesses, it reminds mothers and babes of the simple design of the body.

This footling breech babe – born au natural!

IF  there is a reason for a breech position – like the placenta has grown in a way that is blocking a position change or the cord has become looped in a way that will be restricted with a turn, then the baby just will not move.  NO remedy will override the wisdom of the body and this includes the mother’s body and the baby’s body.  I also would assume that there are some babies that just know that they are meant to be born breech.  Every body is unique.

The remedy will make the suggestion and if it is accepted, the baby will turn within 24 hours.  Interestingly mothers rarely seem to feel the turn, even if this is happening late in the pregnancy.
This provides me with additional evidence that the simplicity of the body just feels normal – nothing invasive is happening, no real effort is made – it is simply a suggestion that is being carried out by the baby.

The remedy for a breech position is Pulsatilla 200C.  Take two pellets, that is all you need.

Pulsatilla mothers often are in an emotional state in which they are having difficulty landing on a solid plan for their birth, they may be debating home or hospital, frequently have people attending the birth they do not particularly want present and are focused on how to make everyone around them happy.  They may even feel unsure about their ability to give birth and feel unprepared to make that commitment. The indecisiveness is reflected in the baby – the baby moves into many positions or lands in a breech position,  which in turn takes the decision making process away from the mother and into the hands of a surgeon.

Taking Pulsatilla will strengthen the mother’s ability to be steady in her choices and ultimately reassure the baby that she is by his side as they have a birth experience together.

Lastly, you do not have to worry that taking Pulsatilla and turning the baby will induce labour.  Again this is a situation in which homeopathy CANNOT override your body and you will only go into labour if the time is right for everyone.

Overstimulation and the Crying Baby

Crying is one way babies respond to overstimulation.  In my experience babies have very few filters for what we consider every day noise, light and interaction with the world.  Some babies simply go to sleep to escape, others nurse and nurse and still others scream and cry.

Interestingly it is mothers who crave a lot of stimulation in their lives that have very sensitive babies.  Babies are very powerful people, without the ability to speak they are extremely clear about their optimal environment.  Since this translates as a calm baby that is willing to sleep, most parents are willing to adapt.  Just like that your whole life changes.

The process of homeopathic case taking will assist you in understanding the cues of your child and the environment that is best for their well-being.  Feeling relaxed is actually part of survival for babies as they are able to eat, digest and sleep at a higher level than if they are stressed.

the deeper work of parenting

Homeopathic remedies will help ease the sensitivity and reactivity of your baby, helping them to calm faster and seek comfort instead of escalating their response.

Situations that promote overstimulation include;

  • having company in your home that wants to hold your baby
  • trips to the grocery store, mall or errands in the car
  • attending events – weddings, parties, sporting events etc.
  • naps timed to occur  in the car
  • bringing the baby to appointments and errands

I know that it seems like you won’t be able to do anything when you have a newborn and you are right.  Babies do not want to attend classes or go shopping.  They want a quiet, calm environment, soft light and a slow pace.  In this setting they will thrive.  You can push through and sometimes it just happens,  but those are the times that your baby will fuss, cry, be unable to settle and require a lot of extra grounding – this is what overtimulation looks like.

Mothers can schedule their own time for appointments, shopping, social time when their partners are home or a friend is available to be with the baby in their home.  As time goes on babies will become more flexible and able to tolerate outings and adventures.

If you do want to go out with your baby I suggest:

  • the forest, walks away from cars and noise
  • small quiet groups where you feel calm and peaceful
  • meeting one friend at a time for a visit
  • the library

Keep it simple at the pace of a baby.  Use a sling to provide a buffer for your newborn.

It is highly possible that in this way of living you will also feel calm and rested, peaceful and present.  Try it.

Is anyone else bored by the FLU shot? Its so yesterday….

green cross for first aidReplace the flu shot and the over the counter medication with homeopathic remedies, good quality food, water and a relationship with a chiropractor or osteopath.

I find it very disturbing that the flu shot is recommended for pregnant women, especially in this world in which there are so many other much healthier options available.  Begin by putting together a Homeopathic Acute Care kit.  It is safe and easy to prescribe homeopathy for adults and children. Homeopathy is safe for pregnancy and for newborns.

There are no side effects – which is pretty revolutionary considering pretty much any other medical substance you put in your mouth has MANY side effects.

The remedies I recommend including are:

Aconite 1M– sudden high fever, croup that begins in the night with fever, acute ear pain with fever, ailments from fright

Antimonium Tartaricum 200C- especially useful for babies – chest colds with low grade fever, sweaty, too young to actively  move the mucus out of the lungs. Loose rattling cough but not much coming out. Will usually make the child vomit up the mucus.

Arsenicum 200C – food poisoning, vomiting and diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, chills, restless, anxious

Belladonna 1M – sudden high fever, RIGHT sided inflammatory complaints – ear, sinus, headache, breast, joints, frightened, intense, red, flushed and radiating heat.

Bryonia 200C – head pain with DRY cough, irritable, worse from being moved, thirsty – fears to cough because of pain.

Cantharis 200C – UTI – pain is worse at night, violent, burning pain in urethra and constant urging to urinate

Chamomilla 1M – teething, sudden ear pain, waking in the night shrieking, worse being touched, one cheek red, stool is green.

Eupatorium 200C – flu remedy – deep achy bones, chills, painful headache and cough, sore throat.

Gelsemium 200C – heavy eyes, heavy limbs, achy but not debilitating like Eupatorium.  Chilly, especially up the back, weakness, vertigo, ailments from anticipation of performance – a bad cold right before going into labour or a big presentation.

Hepar sulph 200C – last croup remedy – when the mucus arrives and the mood is foul – hypersensitive to pain, touch and cold. CHILLY, recurrent attacks of suppurating tonsillitis, sinus infections with thick, yellow mucus, discharge from ears.

Rumex 200C – tickling cough – continuous cough, profuse discharges, dry membranes – raw throat from coughing

Spongia 200C – DRY cough, barking, croup remedy after Aconite, membranes are all dry.

Sulphur 200C– loose stool, strong odour, red, sweaty, fevers but GOOD mood. Loose chest cold. Great to finish a loose cough that has been hanging around for awhile.

Phosphorus 1M – chest colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, nosebleeds, thirsty, in need of constant company and touch, hungry and thirsty for cold water and juicy foods.

Phosphoric Acid 200C – dehydration, loss of fluids, headache, fatigue, emotionally flat – after any food poisoning, vomiting, diarrhea, blood loss or excessive breastfeeding.

Mercurius 200C – swollen glands, sweating, drooling, sinus infection with green discharges – colds go to the eyes, for sudden infections in foreskins of little boys

Pulsatilla 200c – yellowish thick discharge – pink eye, mucus filled cough, weepy, clingy, thirstless.

Lachesis 200C – sore throat, swollen glands, left side, headache on the left side, worse after waking from sleep.

You can do this and if you need guidance,  I am available to provide it via email.  Simply visit my website – http://www.pipermartin.com and set yourself up to experience a true level of health.

How PACE and TIMING = SLEEPING BABIES

yawning babe

One of the best things you can actually DO to influence a baby’s sleep is to allow them to sleep more.

Be HOME for nap time. Do NOT expect your baby to sleep well at night if you have spent large parts of the day out doing errands and toting the baby along.

SLOW down your own pace of life and fall into the rhythm of your baby.  Your baby will be healthier, sleep better and feel more relaxed the more you go at their pace.

Try to honour those napping hours and you may find you become addicted to the quiet yourself…

When you are home use simple cues that let the babe know it is their dedicated rest time.

For example: when it is time to sleep ~

  • tell the babe it is sleep time
  • close the blind
  • hold them close and sing the same song
  • lay them down and say sweet dreams…
  • leave the room

Simple, EASY and repetitive.  If you are nursing then nurse them , and then while they are still awake go through your sleep ritual, allow them to learn how to put themselves to sleep – I would say the optimal window for this learning is between 3-5 months.  Any earlier and they are just too little, falling sound asleep on the breast most times.  Any older and they tend to be moving off the bed or standing up in a crib and forgetting to lay back down.

What I know from experience in my home and in my practice,  is that the more babies sleep during the day,  the more they sleep at night.  If you allow them real rest time during their day then the nights tend to be more peaceful.  What I mean by this is perhaps 4 golden hours in a row –

Be easy on yourself about this, there is nothing you are doing wrong, you will find your way together and usually if you slow things down, babies are more then willing to share their sleepy time with you!

If you feel your baby is overstimulated by an outing, then try a dose of Coffea 200C. Two pellets of this homeopathic remedy will help them to calm down and settle in for the night.  A good thing to stock up on over the Holiday season.

Baby LOVE

Homeopathy + Babies

crashed out babe and dad

1.  Homeopathy addresses mental/emotional aspects of birth and pregnancy –  what other medicine can provide that for a baby?

2.  Allows parents to be keen observers of their children, becoming familiar with and giving attention to the normal, vibrant state of their child and acknowledging that state frequently.  This includes finding language to describe aspects of their bodies and emotions,  and in turn teaching that language to your children.

3.  Using homeopathy sends the message to your children that you believe in their healthy, capable bodies.  Imagine growing up hearing that your parents believe you are perfectly capable to listening to, responding to and healing your own body? What would come out of a belief like that ?

4.  The pellets are small, children enjoy taking them, they cause no side effects and they are very affordable.  You can easily build a home pharmacy and have access to it day and night.

5.  Piper Martin is a Classical Homeopath that specializes in the care of Pregnant women and Babies.  She offers parents affordable care and acute support for all of her clients with babies.  To book an appointment for your baby please visit http://www.pipermartin.com
