Remedies for Crying Babies – Newborns

I am going to do a little series on remedies for crying babies because after working with babies for many years I think there are a wide variety of reasons babies express themselves in this way.

Today I would like to focus on the very newborn babies.  The first thing I am curious about is the birth experience.  This type of crying may well have to do with pain from a difficult birth and it is VERY important to look into this with a pediatric chiropractor or a osteopath that has experience working with babies.

Rough handling of the head, neck and jaw can lead to pain and distress for newborns.  In order to nurse effectively they must turn their necks freely and be able to open their jaw wide to latch.  If they have had vacuum, forceps or cesarean delivery then it is very possible that they will need some supportive care to address the mechanical misalignment.

It is a difficult process to go through when mothers and babies are newly postpartum but you may find care providers that will be willing to do home visits, just ask.  This is an excellent reason to set up care before  you have a baby so that these relationships are established and that extra work will not have to be done during the postpartum.

Crying Babies – Homeopathic Remedies to Soothe

Chamomilla 200C is one of the best remedies for a screaming baby.  This remedy is very sensitive in general and their reaction to something they do not like is to shriek.

Keywords

  • shrieking
  • screaming
  • capricious – can’t make up their minds about what they want.  Everything works for about 1min. before they are screaming again.
  • wake up screaming – worst time is 10am or 10pm.
  • they DO NOT want whoever is holding them to sit down, they must keep moving.
  • sensitive to touch – i.e:  examining their ear for a suspected ear infection will further increase shrieking and may also include striking and kicking at the examiner.
  • inconsolable
  • worse from WIND – in these past few days of high wind this remedy starts to show up more.  Chamomilla children are sensitive to wind.
  • TEETHING is a time Chamomilla is most widely used.  This is due to the element of pain and can also include – diarrhea (green), one red cheek, one white cheek, fever and sleeplessness (both mothers and babies!)

One dose of Chamomilla 200C will ease the sensitivity so that the babies can sleep.  Just being able to sleep will ease a lot of the reaction.  Although teething is the most common etiology of this remedy it can be triggered by any sensation of pain that the baby may feel.  This would include physical birth trauma, colic, ear infections etc.

Homeopathic remedies come in the form of very small pellets that babies are easily able to suck on and dissolve.  IF that is not comfortable for you then you can put two pellets into a 1/4 cup of water and allow them to melt.  Give your baby a teaspoon of that mixture.

Crying babies – Crying mammas……

Since my post on crying babies got such a crazy amount of attention I think it warrants another post on the topic!  So – how about the crying mammas

If you can consider how you might support yourself instead of trying to “fix” your baby you may see a shift happen in both of you.  By support I mean –

  • hire someone to come and do food prep
  • create small amounts of space to get some fresh air, exercise or just go for a coffee in silence!
  • eat well – nourish your body as well as you possibly can.
  • allow yourself time away from your baby to re-charge – it makes a HUGE difference
  • talk about what is happening – try not to isolate – it makes it more intense and lonely.
  • keep a journal – not just a crying journal of your baby but in the bigger picture what is going on in your life.  Perhaps at some later point you might come to understand how the crying fits into the whole shape of your life.
