Crying Babies ~ Teething

I wonder why the process of getting teeth is easy for some babies and really challenging for others.  Some children just wake up with a new tooth!

Others seem to “work” on getting a tooth for months.  If you are in this situation anytime between six months and two years old than here are some remedy suggestions to ease the pain and the transition:

Pulsatilla 200C

Pulsatilla children need an abundance of comfort, reassurance and snuggles.  Anytime they are uncomfortable they need to be held, carried and sleep next to their mothers.  They may have moments of play and good moods but then will slip back into weepy and whining.

  • weepy
  • clingy
  • soft – they aren’t screamers, just soft, whiny crying
  • need constant physical contact
  • extra, extra, extra nursing time
  • low appetite and thirst while teething
  • may get thick, yellowish discharges with teething – from eyes, ears or nose

Chamomilla 1M

Perhaps the most famous of the teething remedies.  It does work like magic when you have a person who is a fit for the remedy.  These children are pretty easy to identify because of a few dramatic factors:

  • SHRIEKING AND SCREAMING
  • very, very reactive to pain
  • capricious – ask for a drink and then hurl it across the room, ask to be picked up but the adult MUST walk, bounce or jiggle them exactly as they want to be held.
  • one cheek red
  • green stool

Calcarea Carbonica 200C

This is a baby that has a slow pace for teeth, and bones.  They are slow to crawl, walk or get teeth.  They like to observe and take their time with the next step.  When they are teething they will appear to be taking months to push a tooth through the gums.

  • head sweaters – their head is often sweaty while nursing or sleeping.
  • cradle cap
  • often have thrush as babies
  • they are not as weepy as the other remedies but their sleep will be greatly disturbed and they will need to nurse very often during the night.
  • will eat sand, chalk, pencils, paper
  • can get Belladonna fevers while teething – dry heat, radiating out from head, flushed with glazed eyes.

If none of these remedy descriptions fit your child then don’t despair – there are many  more! Please contact me for online consultations regarding the best match for your baby.

Breech Babies ~ the TURN!

Pulsatilla – the windflower~ is blooming right now.  Early spring is the time that this plant blooms and moves with the wind and rain of the season.  Pulsatilla is a remedy that is very common to see as a remedy state in pregnancy and in children.

pulsatilla

Pregnancy

Pulsatilla is the remedy to remind a breech or transverse baby that the most anatomically correct way to be born is in an anterior, vertex position.  This may not be the case for all babies, I do think there are babies that do just fine being born breech.  But for those that can change the position safely, Pulsatilla creates the gentle reminder and the mother and baby create a more optimal fetal position together.

This happens within 24 hours of taking a single dose of Pulsatilla 200C and quite often the mother is not aware of it happening.  I have clinically seen this occur up to the 39th week of pregnancy.

This is a safe option to explore.  The remedy will only work if the change of position is to the advantage of the baby.  If the cord is too short or tangled to make the switch, nothing will happen.  If the placement of the placenta will be compromised by a move, then again, the baby will not turn.  Homeopathy is safe because it ONLY works with the body, it can’t override the body.  It makes suggestions and the body can choose to respond or not.

Pulsatilla is also very helpful for:

  • morning sickness
  • fear of labour
  • jealousy in pregnancy
  • long first stage of labour that stops and starts
  • indecisive about planning for birth

Childhood Pulsatilla

Baby

A Pulsatilla baby is usually born to a Pulsatilla mother.  These babies will strongly prefer to  be carried every moment, mainly by their mothers.  They need a lot of attention, tending, adjusting and adapting on the part of  the mother.  They weep often but are quickly consoled by cuddling.  They are changeable babies and very sensitive to being alone – even for a moment. You will observe all of these same characteristics present in the mother as well.

Child

  • thick, yellow discharges – eyes, nose or ears
  • remedy for chickenpox – still wants to snuggle despite the itching
  • thirstless – have to beg this child to take sips

Pulsatilla 200C is an appropriate dose for both pregnant women and children.  Please visit my website for more information.  I offer online consults, learning opportunities and ebooks on my site.  Thank you for reading and your feedback!

Overstimulation and the Crying Baby

Crying is one way babies respond to overstimulation.  In my experience babies have very few filters for what we consider every day noise, light and interaction with the world.  Some babies simply go to sleep to escape, others nurse and nurse and still others scream and cry.

Interestingly it is mothers who crave a lot of stimulation in their lives that have very sensitive babies.  Babies are very powerful people, without the ability to speak they are extremely clear about their optimal environment.  Since this translates as a calm baby that is willing to sleep, most parents are willing to adapt.  Just like that your whole life changes.

The process of homeopathic case taking will assist you in understanding the cues of your child and the environment that is best for their well-being.  Feeling relaxed is actually part of survival for babies as they are able to eat, digest and sleep at a higher level than if they are stressed.

the deeper work of parenting

Homeopathic remedies will help ease the sensitivity and reactivity of your baby, helping them to calm faster and seek comfort instead of escalating their response.

Situations that promote overstimulation include;

  • having company in your home that wants to hold your baby
  • trips to the grocery store, mall or errands in the car
  • attending events – weddings, parties, sporting events etc.
  • naps timed to occur  in the car
  • bringing the baby to appointments and errands

I know that it seems like you won’t be able to do anything when you have a newborn and you are right.  Babies do not want to attend classes or go shopping.  They want a quiet, calm environment, soft light and a slow pace.  In this setting they will thrive.  You can push through and sometimes it just happens,  but those are the times that your baby will fuss, cry, be unable to settle and require a lot of extra grounding – this is what overtimulation looks like.

Mothers can schedule their own time for appointments, shopping, social time when their partners are home or a friend is available to be with the baby in their home.  As time goes on babies will become more flexible and able to tolerate outings and adventures.

If you do want to go out with your baby I suggest:

  • the forest, walks away from cars and noise
  • small quiet groups where you feel calm and peaceful
  • meeting one friend at a time for a visit
  • the library

Keep it simple at the pace of a baby.  Use a sling to provide a buffer for your newborn.

It is highly possible that in this way of living you will also feel calm and rested, peaceful and present.  Try it.

The Shriekers – Remedies for Crying Babies

crying babe

Some babies seem to prefer to express themselves by crying, shrieking, wailing and flailing! The following remedies are suggested for those babies in order that the crying can be perhaps brought into proportion, that their ability to communicate becomes more easily understood and that they are able to accept consolation from their weary parents!

The Shriekers

Nux vomica, Coffea and Chamomilla – these are the top three shriekers in the materia medica.  They all can cry for different reasons but the thing they have in common is sensitivity.  They all have big reactions to stimulation and they way they express is by very loud and high-pitched scream crying.

Nux vomica – is most commonly seen in premature babies.  They are sensitive to everything – noise, light, touch and engagement.  The tricky thing about them is that they seem to LOVE stimulation and their mothers definitely LOVE stimulation – the problem is that they cannot handle it.  Stimulation creates colic like symptoms and shrieking begins and can last many days.  By stimulation I mean things like visitors, trips out anywhere from the grocery store to the zoo – these babies do best by staying at home with just the immediate family.  Initially they do best by just staying in one room and not even really moving throughout the house.  Seems unbelievable I know, but if you want a calm baby – try it.  Nux vomica will help them become more flexible and allowing of stimulation and gradually their tolerance will increase.

Coffea – has the unusual shrieking reaction from excitement.  Large amounts of stimulating excitement create a baby that is unable to settle down and sleep.  Instead they have insomnia, become overtired and then the crying begins.  Think about how you feel if you have had too much coffee –  nervy, twitchy, overreacting to everything.  Make it quiet and dark.  After excitement allow lots of down time before asking the baby to settle to sleep, a bath can be a great way of calming.  Excitement might be things like Christmas, guests, large outings, lots of noise or people holding/talking to the baby. Coffea helps to speed the process of calming down and is great as an acute remedy for when the situation occurs.

Chamomilla – Chamomilla is usually used during times of teething to sooth crying and insomniac babies, the reason it works so well during this period is that Chamomilla babies have an over reaction to pain.  Their crying comes from reactions to things other babies may not have any response to.  They are very sensitive to touch and how they are handled during episodes of discomfort and since the first two years of life can often involve some sensations such as teething,  the crying and reacting may seem constant.  Chamomilla allows the child to sleep.  Chamomilla children usually like some pretty extreme bouncing and jiggling to perhaps counterbalance the sensations they are feeling, the remedy settles down that need so that the parents may also have a rest!

Pulsatilla 200C- when and why to use this remedy

Pulsatilla is a very common remedy to see in pregnancy, labour and postpartum.  If a remedy works well for you in pregnancy – i.e. it addresses your morning sickness, then it is highly likely that will also be useful for induction, to augment labour or to support any breastfeeding challenges.  Pulsatilla is a remedy that appears to follow a woman from pregnancy to postpartum and often it will be the first remedy to consider should the baby need a remedy.

Pulsatilla emotionally looks like:

  • weeps easily
  • looks for comfort and reassurance and allows this
  • indecisive
  • emotional about other children, fear of them feeling abandoned
  • looks to those around her for guidance instead of tapping into her own

Physically this translates as:

  • discharges that are yellow, thick and emerging from eyes, nose, ears – newborn goopy eyes
  • craves touch no matter what – even while in transition prefer to be cuddled and touched
  • morning sickness that changes day by day – different triggers, different times, different reactions to food.
  • indecisiveness is reflected in the baby assuming many positions during pregnancy and often goes breech, labour that starts and stops and is experienced all through the body – contractions in legs, bum, back, abdomen, unable to commit to the labour taking Pulsatilla will create a regular rhythm to the labour and is the gesture of commitment that is needed to progress.
  • goes into labour only when children are in bed or being cared for – reluctant to really be in labour without the midwives, husband, mother, support team that she has assembled all around her – within sight
  • very changeable milk supply and supply that is easily effected by food, company, upset, discharges etc.

pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is a plant remedy, made of the wind flower – it blooms in the spring and softly blows in the wind – a way to remember its soft, changeable nature and being a plant its reaction to and awareness of its environment.

Babies

  • use Pulsatilla for babies if you have a baby with separation anxiety – by that I mean if you cannot walk out of a room without the baby weeping.
  • This is such a useful remedy for siblings that may be feeling jealous and becoming very weepy and whiny as a means of expressing their feelings.  Pulsatilla will reassure them of their stability in the family.

The Homeopathic Babe – Letting them Cry it OUT

I see many mothers and babies in my practice and one of the common issues that arises during these conversations circles around sleep and the belief around babies crying it out.

The one element that every mother has in common is that listening to your baby cry alone while you try to sleep or allow them to fall back asleep feels terrible.

Generally my approach with all mothers is to encourage them to trust their instinct, their gut, their feelings, their intuitive knowingness as a mother.  When our babies cry and we respond it is the natural and complementary response between a mother and baby.  We feel uncomfortable for a reason, all the books and advice in the world do not matter when your baby is crying. Perhaps you do want to change something in your sleep ritual and your baby is resisting – that is real, however feeling distressed is not going to make your baby feel calm.  You need to continue honing the shift until it suits both of you. The only right way is the way that feels right, when something sits well with you I think you will generally find your baby more accepting of that change.

The Homeopathic Babe – Super Sensitive People

My Homeopathic Babe post will focus on Super Sensitive babies today – I have a special place in my heart for these babies because our world (in this North American society) really does not do much to protect or allow these children to unfold at their own pace.  Super sensitive babies are in reality probably all babies, some just seem to tolerate over-stimulation better than others.

I would suggest that in many cases of colic and reflux babies are simply pushed beyond their limits and exhibit their stress through their digestive system.  Some of the remedies for colic and reflux definitely reflect this relationship between an inability to tolerate noise, light, intense energy, movement or a fast pace.  A remedy such as Nux vomica falls into this category of a babe that reacts through colic symptoms any time their environment is just overwhelming to them.  As adults it is hard to understand why even leaving the bedroom can be overstimulating but if you think of babies as having no ability to filter – noise, light, movement or energy then you will begin to understand why babies use screaming and writhing to change their environment to better suit their needs.  Most of us react to this by trying to do MORE – shushing, moving, wrapping, unwrapping, distracting etc.  Try doing LESS.  Wrap, dim the lights, speak little and quietly, sit calmly.

Another less known remedy for people who are extremely sensitive is a remedy made of Vernix.  Vernix is the white, protective layer on our skin while we are in utero, most babies are born with some evidence of this still intact.  Think of this as a second skin.  When someone needs Vernix literally everything can feel distressing to them, the slightest touch, sound, movement will create a desire to go inward and withdraw.  Babies that need Vernix feel overwhelmed by their environment, react to any environmental agents with big allergic reactions and skin outbreaks of various kinds.  They feel attacked, threatened and their response is to withdraw.  This is a potential remedy for children with autism.  Everything is just too much.

Babies do not need swimming lessons, infant stimulation classes, mom and baby yoga, music etc.  The mothers need stimulation and connection – the babes need to be at home, quiet, peaceful and grounded to begin their lives.  I love babies so much I will continue to be a voice for them as much as I possibly can.  This kind of information is not to create guilt but just to ask mothers to check in with how it feels to be out with a baby – I seldom see a mom that feels relaxed and grounded in the prep to leave the house or the being out.  There is a reason for this.
