The perfect time to give birth

trust the timing of your life

If a woman has been able to create and grow a baby,  it is reasonable to assume that she will also be able to give birth “on time”?

It’s difficult to drop a topic such as due dates that has so much momentum,  but one way to do this is to choose something equally dynamic to focus on.  How about the idea that you have perfect timing?  That things fall into place – the right feeling person is on call, that the traffic lights are all green, that you and your partner are rested and ready for action, and that your new little babe also has a sense of perfect timing.

I can’t help but consider the perception of the baby through an induction.

Create a general statement that is reassuring to you and your baby with regard to the idea of a due date.  Something such as; I know this will all unfold perfectly, I will know by the ease and flow that my timing is excellent, I can trust that this baby will give me a signal when he/she is ready to make their transition into this outer world.  …

It is just as possible to believe in these statements and ideas as it is to believe in the feeling of running out of time, deadlines, due dates and the general bad feeling of being late.  If you find yourself worrying about or talking about a due date, go to these statements for soothing.  You will know by the relief your body feels when you think those thoughts that you are on the right path.

This type of thinking is what I offer along with a suggestion for a homeopathic remedy to lift off fear and allow more freedom within the body and the mind.

If you need assistance with this please contact me via my website – http://www.pipermartin.com

Why Acute illness is GOOD, really, really GOOD.

Imagine you are a little kid that spends much of your time in the company of your family, in your familiar home and in a routine that is built mainly around you.  To make the transition to a daycare or school requires all kinds of new neurological pathways to evolve and as this happens, children get sick.

Every sight, smell and sensation is unknown in this environment – new care providers, new companions, new food, new touch, new rules, new pace, new ideas –

Children do not mentally hold their stress, they are experts at discharging and will blow all that overload out via mucus, fever, skin rashes, vomit, diarrhea, sweat.  They let it go physically as they adapt and thrive mentally/emotionally.  You can try to ease these transitions in all the ways you know how,  but there is just inevitably growth.  Growth and change are reflected in the body and as parents you need ways of allowing it.

bed in the forest

Homeopathy allows the change, supports the mental/emotional expansion and does not suppress the discharge.  Think of all the suppressants we use on ourselves and our children – in the form of creams, ointments, deodorants and decongestants.  If we allowed our bodies to just do what they are inclined to do – would our level of health change?

You can model this way of being in your body to your kids – take time off when you feel ill, offer yourself comfort and enjoy the mental/emotional relief of having some time to integrate fresh experiences.  Use homeopathy if you feel the illness is out of proportion or stuck in a particular phase.

The Monthly Cycle of Self-Care

new pms cycle

For the past several years I have encouraged patients to make notes on a weekly basis of what is happening for them during their cycle.  We tend to pay lots of attention to PMS symptoms because they are often negative and feel out of control but there is  much more to it then that!

You will start to notice as the patterns evolve that each week of your cycle is unique.  Some weeks you will feel social, energetic and full of engagement with the world.

Other weeks you may feel inward and creative and contemplative.

If you start to be specific in how you schedule yourself around your cycle you may feel more at ease.  The first step is to identify how you feel in each week.  Next take the time to think about how you want to play with that – exercise when your energy levels are highest, socialize when you feel your most outward, stock up on good books and art supplies when you are inward.

This is real self-care.

Teach your daughters.

Homeopathic Travel Kit

yellow camper

Wondering what to pack for your summer travels?

Here are my top ten suggestions.

How to take these remedies? A dose is always two pellets – despite the label on the container!

Take two and wait, observe and you will know if you need to repeat.

  • If things settle down, the crying or discomfort stops then two is enough.
  • If it reduces the intensity but isn’t gone,  then repeat the remedy.
  • If it does nothing then you have the wrong remedy.

Aconite 1M

  • after a fright
  • sudden fever in the night
  • sudden ear pain in the night
  • ear pain after a windy day
  • injuries to the eye

Apis 200C

  • all bites that create swelling, redness and heat
  • injuries and swelling around the eyes and all mucus membranes
  • allergic reactions – on all levels from anaphylactic shock to topical eruptions

Anacardium 200C

  • poison oak and poison ivy
  • all itchy, blistery rashes and reactions

Arnica 200C

  • bruises and blunt trauma
  • head injuries
  • shock
  • bleeding
  • overuse of muscles

Arsenicum 200C

  • food poisoning and any symptoms that are similar
  • vomiting and diarrhea
  • nausea
  • restless, anxious, fearful of vomiting
  • anxiety about germs and food safety

Belladonna 1M

  • sudden fevers, especially at 3:00
  • heat stroke – red face, glazed eyes, fever
  • headaches – from the sun, pounding and throbbing with flushed face
  • inflammation – ears, eyes, throat, breast etc.
  • onset of symptoms after doing something out of your comfort zone

Calendula ointment

do a small test patch before applying widely.

  • apply Calendula directly onto open wounds
  • sunburn
  • cuts and burns
  • insect bites

will prevent infection and speed healing

Coffea 200C

  • insomnia after a lot of stimulation or excitement
  • unable to shut off the mind after travel
  • jet lag

Hypericum 200C

  • injuries to the spine, head and tailbone
  • injuries to fingers, toes and tongue
  • puncture wounds – animal bites
  • cat scratches

Phosphoric Acid 200C

  • dehydration
  • headaches from dehydration
  • low energy, flat emotionally
  • after loss of fluids – excessive sweating, diarrhea, vomiting and breastfeeding

If your family has constitutional remedies these are always a good idea to include in your travel kit.  If you need guidance or would like to have a consult to find out more about homeopathic first aid or using constiutional remedies please contact me at http://www.pipermartin.com

Crying Babies ~ Teething

I wonder why the process of getting teeth is easy for some babies and really challenging for others.  Some children just wake up with a new tooth!

bandana baby

Others seem to “work” on getting a tooth for months.  If you are in this situation anytime between six months and two years old than here are some remedy suggestions to ease the pain and the transition:

Pulsatilla 200C

Pulsatilla children need an abundance of comfort, reassurance and snuggles.  Anytime they are uncomfortable they need to be held, carried and sleep next to their mothers.  They may have moments of play and good moods but then will slip back into weepy and whining.

  • weepy
  • clingy
  • soft – they aren’t screamers, just soft, whiny crying
  • need constant physical contact
  • extra, extra, extra nursing time
  • low appetite and thirst while teething
  • may get thick, yellowish discharges with teething – from eyes, ears or nose

Chamomilla 1M

Perhaps the most famous of the teething remedies.  It does work like magic when you have a person who is a fit for the remedy.  These children are pretty easy to identify because of a few dramatic factors:

  • SHRIEKING AND SCREAMING
  • very, very reactive to pain
  • capricious – ask for a drink and then hurl it across the room, ask to be picked up but the adult MUST walk, bounce or jiggle them exactly as they want to be held.
  • one cheek red
  • green stool

Calcarea Carbonica 200C

This is a baby that has a slow pace for teeth, and bones.  They are slow to crawl, walk or get teeth.  They like to observe and take their time with the next step.  When they are teething they will appear to be taking months to push a tooth through the gums.

  • head sweaters – their head is often sweaty while nursing or sleeping.
  • cradle cap
  • often have thrush as babies
  • they are not as weepy as the other remedies but their sleep will be greatly disturbed and they will need to nurse very often during the night.
  • will eat sand, chalk, pencils, paper
  • can get Belladonna fevers while teething – dry heat, radiating out from head, flushed with glazed eyes.

If none of these remedy descriptions fit your child then don’t despair – there are many  more! Please contact me for online consultations regarding the best match for your baby.
