Sepia and Nux Vomica – Friends of the Pregnant Woman!

sepia

Remedies have relationships and belong to families.  This is one way of organizing and understanding how remedies may work together.  Sepia and Nux vomica are two such remedies.

Sepia

Sepia is a very hormonally based remedy and hence the reason it shows up a lot during pregnancy.  Sepia women feel hormonal changes strongly, each shift such as menarche, the birth control pill, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause create imbalance and difficulty for the Sepia woman.  During pregnancy Sepia women may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • aversion to their husband – this is a strong aversion – including the smell of their husband
  • aversion to their children – general impatience and feeling of being overwhelmed
  • exhaustion
  • lack of tone – sensation as if the baby is falling out
  • prolapse – bladder, rectum or uterus
  • craving for vinegar
  • stasis – varicose veins, hemorrhoids, constipation and cold hands and feet
  • desire for vigorous exercise but too tired to do so
  • aversion to breastfeeding – would prefer to go to work and this is their main conflict – knowing breastfeeding is a good choice for the baby but lacking the desire to sit and do it.

Nux Vomica

Nux vomica is the acute remedy of Sepia.  This means if a person is constitutionally a Sepia type,  then Nux vomica will work well for acute complaints – symptoms that are temporary and passing through.

For example

  • morning sickness in pregnancy – this feels like being hung over – dry heaves, retching, headache and BAD mood
  • withdrawal from coffee, tea, drugs or alcohol – headache, constipation and BAD MOOD
  • impatience in traffic, at work, with families – extreme lack of tolerance and patience – translates in labour as a premature urge to push
  • short-tempered
  • headaches
  • constipation – with urging but little output
  • very sensitive to noise, light, stimulation and big reactions when overstimulated.
  • babies that cannot handle stimulation, especially premature babies

Pulsatilla 200C- when and why to use this remedy

Pulsatilla is a very common remedy to see in pregnancy, labour and postpartum.  If a remedy works well for you in pregnancy – i.e. it addresses your morning sickness, then it is highly likely that will also be useful for induction, to augment labour or to support any breastfeeding challenges.  Pulsatilla is a remedy that appears to follow a woman from pregnancy to postpartum and often it will be the first remedy to consider should the baby need a remedy.

Pulsatilla emotionally looks like:

  • weeps easily
  • looks for comfort and reassurance and allows this
  • indecisive
  • emotional about other children, fear of them feeling abandoned
  • looks to those around her for guidance instead of tapping into her own

Physically this translates as:

  • discharges that are yellow, thick and emerging from eyes, nose, ears – newborn goopy eyes
  • craves touch no matter what – even while in transition prefer to be cuddled and touched
  • morning sickness that changes day by day – different triggers, different times, different reactions to food.
  • indecisiveness is reflected in the baby assuming many positions during pregnancy and often goes breech, labour that starts and stops and is experienced all through the body – contractions in legs, bum, back, abdomen, unable to commit to the labour taking Pulsatilla will create a regular rhythm to the labour and is the gesture of commitment that is needed to progress.
  • goes into labour only when children are in bed or being cared for – reluctant to really be in labour without the midwives, husband, mother, support team that she has assembled all around her – within sight
  • very changeable milk supply and supply that is easily effected by food, company, upset, discharges etc.

pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is a plant remedy, made of the wind flower – it blooms in the spring and softly blows in the wind – a way to remember its soft, changeable nature and being a plant its reaction to and awareness of its environment.

Babies

  • use Pulsatilla for babies if you have a baby with separation anxiety – by that I mean if you cannot walk out of a room without the baby weeping.
  • This is such a useful remedy for siblings that may be feeling jealous and becoming very weepy and whiny as a means of expressing their feelings.  Pulsatilla will reassure them of their stability in the family.

One request I often hear is “are there remedies to make me stop smoking, eating sugar, drinking coffee, smoking pot etc.?”  The answer is yes.

If you can figure out  why you have those addictions through the homeopathic case taking process,  you can use remedies to support yourself in both getting through the mental/emotional aspect of the addiction as well as dealing with the withdrawal and detoxing physical symptoms of the process.

Nux vomica is one of the remedies that can be used to support people choosing to go off of coffee, marijuana, alcohol and cigarettes.  Nux vomica people tend to use substance to get them through the high pace of their life.  They are usually fast movers, workaholics, highly social with a tendency to overindulge in food, alcohol and other substance.

People that need Nux vomica will experience great irritability, headaches, constipation, morning sickness that feels like a hang over – retching and nausea.  Women attempting to create a better environment for their babies need to wade through these symptoms of detox and homeopathy is a great support as this process occurs.

Fear

Many women have a fear of vomiting during labour or during pregnancy.  This is not a fear that is limited to being pregnancy,  but because the possibility is greater during pregnancy it really seems to become more intense.

Physical Symptoms

The remedy for this fear is Arsenicum 200C.  Arsenicum is made of Arsenic and is one of the remedies to treat food poisoning and a fear of being poisoned in general.  All of the symptoms for an Arsencium person go to their stomach and bowels.  they become very agitated, anxious, restless and alternate between wanting to vomit and wanting to have diarrhea.  Sometimes both occur simultaneously.

Control

Arsenicum is a remedy that really wants to be in control and pregnancy and labour are both life experiences that do not really allow that.  It is the feeling of being out of control that creates the distress around vomiting.  If you have vomited and are afraid of it happening again to the point that it is causing you anxiety then try a dose of Arsenicum 200C.  If the vomiting creates a panic attack in the moment try Aconite 1M – two pellets.

Most importantly try and work with allowing yourself to feel out of control, even temporarily so that you may work with labour more effectively.
